•>RICE LIST NO. 19
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Item No. 19-1 ANCIENT ASSORTMENT.
One of our agents in London just shipped a large assortment of ancient
coins, some Biblical and Greek but mostly Roman from a large estate.
The condition is generally above average and they are all modestly priced.
Every coin is genuine .... an important historic artifact nearly 2000
years old. Because virtually no two coins in the assortment are identical,
it is not practical to list them individually. We are offering these lots well
below the normal retail value on a first come first serve basis. Every coin
will be identified and we guarantee full satisfaction.
Ancient Assortment “A" $50.00
Ancient Assortment “B” $100.00
Ancient Assortment “C” $1 50.00
Item No. 19-2 SHEKEL OF TYRE
Here’s one of the most significant of all Bible coins to both Jews and
Christians. For Jews, the annual Temple Tax could only be paid in silver
Shekels and Half Shekels of Tyre for almost 150 years! And it was most
likely the Shekel of Tyre that formed the infamous “Thirty Pieces of
Silver” paid to Judas. These are no longer common in any grade. The
lovely piece we are offering is in Extremely Fine condition. These coins
have just about doubled in value in the last 18 months and recent retail
prices are approaching the Si 000 .00 level. But your cost is just half of
that! (Note that an upcoming issue of The Augus will explain how to
read the dates on Shekels of Tyre.)
Shekel of Tyre, 46/45 B.C., Extremely Fine S500.00
Item No. 19-3 RARITY OF HEROD THE GREAT
Dated in the third year of his reign (37 B.C.). Rarely offered! Features a
crested helmet and a circular shield. Unusual fora Judaean coin to show
war implements on both sides. Dark toning but good details.
Nice Fine $175.00
Item No. 194 INEXPENSIVE SHEKEL
If you want the most famous of all ancient Jewish coins . . . but don’t
want to pay $1800.00, $1500.00 or even $1000.00 then here’s your
chance! This silver Shekel was struck in the second year of the First
Revolt (A.D. 67/68) of the Jews against their Roman oppressors. It is
nicely centered with full inscriptions: “Jerusalem the Holy” and “Shekel
of Israel”. This is one of the few ancient coins with the denomination
indicated.
Very Fine Only $835.00
SEVERAL OFFBEAT JUDAEA CAPTA COINS
Item No. 19-5 SILVER DRACHM FROM CAESAREA, CAPPADOCIA.
Judaea Capta coins were normally struck in Judaea and Rome. However
coins on this same theme were also issued in other parts of the Roman
Empire, such as this attractive silver Drachm from nearby Cappadocia.
Featured is the laureate head of Emperor Vespasian (A.D. 69-79) and the
Greek goddess Nike (equivalent to the Roman Victoria).
Very Fine
$155.00
Item No. 19-6 NUMISMATIC INSULT
Issued by Vespasian in A.D. 78/79, this silver Denarius features a sow standing with
three little piglets. Of course, Jewish dietary laws forbid any pork products. . . but
the pig was the emblem of the notorious Tenth Roman Legion which occupied
Jerusalem after the fall of the Temple.
Very Fine with a nice portrait $285.0^
Item No. 19-7 TENTH LEGION
In ancient times when coins became worn so that the designs became indistinct they
would cease to circulate unless the ruling authorities counterstamped it, indicating
that it still had value. Such coins are of great historic interest and are quite
“collectible’’. We are offering a well worn bronze that was counterstamped on both
sides with a galley design within a rectangle ... a symbol associated with the Roman
Tenth Legion which occupied Judaea in the period after the First Revolt.
Counterstamps Very Good $147.50
Item No. 19-8 EXCEPTIONAL JUDAEA CAPTA QUADRANS
The smaller a coin, the more likely it is to be lost. Thus the greater rarity of small
ancient coins. While the large Judaea Capta bronzes sell for thousands of dollars in
top quality, the small Quadrans coins almost are never seen. But we have one . . and
it is truly lovely! Superb Extremely Fine condition, perfectly centered and just re-
markable! The palm tree on the reverse quickly identifies it as a Judaea Capta piece.
The reverse features a vexillum (Roman military standard). It is dated A.D. 71 , just a
year after the fall of the Jerusalem Temple, in the reign of Vespasian.
Judaea Capta Quadrans, Superb $1 000.00
CHOICE OFFERING OF BAR KOCHBA COINS
Item No. 19-9 RARE “YEAR ONE” BRONZE
The dated coins of Bar Kochba are particulary rare. This medium bronze features the
familiar 7-branched palm tree surrounded by the name of the Jewish revolutionary
leader and his full title - “SIMON NASI (Prince of) ISRAEL” in ancient Hebrew. The
coin dates A.D. 132-133. The date “YEAR ONE OF THE REDEMPTION OF
ISRAEL,’’ surrounds a vine leaf on the reverse. Well struck and centered; far above,
average. Wacks 95. |
Extremely Fine/Nice Very Fine $950.00
We also have a second attractive specimen on a large oval-shaped flan.
Very Fine $845.00
Item No. 19-10 RARE “YEAR TWO” DENARIUS
A well struck example of this rarity! Simon Bar Kochba’s first name within a wreath
and one-handled jug with palm branch with error inscription “ISAREL” instead of
“ISRAEL”.
Extremely Fine
$1050.00
Item No. 19-11 UNDATED BAR KOCHBA
Here’s one of the most reasonable coins of this period you can obtain struck in A.D.
1 34/135, the disastrous last year of the Second Jewish Revolt. Wacks 90.
Nice Fine and only $95.00
Item No. 19-12 SCARCE SMALL BRONZE OF BAR KOCHBA
A lovely example of the smallest bronze denomination issued by Bar Kochba. This is
much scarcer than the above coin. Exceptionally well struck with almost full inscrip-
tions. Usual 7-branched palm tree (representing the holy menorah?) and a bunch of
grapes with ancient Hebrew legends. Wacks 92.
Nice Very Fine $1 80.00
Item No. 19-13 UNDATED SILVER DENARIUS OF BAR KOCHBA
A little jewel! Bunch of grapes and lyre. No wonder the coins of Bar Kochba are con-
sidered amongst the most attractive of all ancient Jewish coinage. Hebrew inscrip-
tion: “FOR THE DELIVERANCE OF ISRAEL". Wacks 100.
Choice Extremely Fine
